Porch Lessons from Nature

I was sitting out on my front porch yesterday, as I do almost every day, and noticed in great detail all of the beautiful foliage right across from our home. We are not in a secluded area by any means, as a matter of fact, the highway is just a couple of turns away.

And then this quote popped into my mind:

“Adopt the pace of nature; her secret is patience.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

I can’t even imagine how old they are, how many stories they have to tell, the sage trees that surround our home. Nature is patient.

There are many things in my life, and I’m sure yours, that we want to unfold. You may remember the famous line from Willy Wonka, “I want it NOW!” With such advancements in technology, we can print our pictures in an instant, send our mail with the click of a button, cash a check without even leaving our computer. But, patience is a virtue. We shouldn’t wait in anticipation for life to happen. It happens naturally as it should moment to moment. And, as Emerson points out, we must adopt the pace of nature.

And, it dawned on me that the trees are all imperfectly gorgeous and unique. Nature is beautiful, but not “perfect”. The trees don’t line up standing the same height wearing the same shade of brown. They are scattered, branches varying in size, shape, color. They are chipped, worn, spotted.  Nature is flawed perfectly.

There are so many lessons right before our eyes when we just open them and take a look around. Today think of something you’ve been wanting, anticipating, and let it go. Let go of the need for perfection. Trust everything will all work out in time and enjoy each moment.
