A dear friend texted me a photo of a beautiful sunset. When I spoke with her about it later that night, she said she had a moment with God, but nothing else came through.
Curious, I asked her what she meant.
She said, “You know, there was no sign or anything. I was hoping for some kind of direction.”
But then she went on to say that this “moment” happened 3 days in a row.
Now I was really curious! 3 days in a row felt like a sign to me, so I dug in a bit deeper. “What were you doing just before these ‘moments’?” I asked her.
Jess responded, “Nothing really. Just trying to focus on breathing, slow down my mind. Be more present because I’m always thinking of one thing or another.”
Ding! Ding! Ding!
All the bells and whistles are going off in my heart, and excitement came over me! “That’s it! That’s the direction!”
“Huh? I didn’t get any direction though?” She was confused by my enthusiasm for what seemed like a missed message.
“You were breathing, practicing presence, and you felt God there with you. You felt the sheer power of being connected to your energy source. So that IS the message! God is showing you how powerful you are when you are present. And, you will be able to hear the direction when you are fully in the moment..”
She took a long pause, “Wow. I didn’t think of that. So the more present I am, the more direction I will have?”
“Absolutely.” And I went on to share this story about the fast cars and a yoga teacher. I wrote about it in my book, Balance is Bunk, too. I’ve been exploring and sharing the benefits of slowing down in a drive thru world for almost two decades, so sometimes I forget the simple power of the teaching to really make a huge shift.
I know personally I feel so much better when I am present. I learned about the power of being present years ago, on one of my seeker bouts when I got into yoga. The instructor talked about it, and then I started taking courses where it was reinforced again. The power to just be present, which seems so simple, is life changing. I enjoyed yoga. As I started to think deeper about God, and prayer became a very important part of my daily routine, when we were doing ‘sun salutations’ in class, I did ‘Son Salutations’ and connected to Jesus. It worked for me. Still does, although with life and schedules, I find I am doing yoga more via a channel on my cable TV instead of in a room filled with women. But being present, that is something I try to practice moment to moment.
